Weak Immune System
What is a weak immune system?
This means your body can’t fight off infections or viruses as well as people who are not immunocompromised.
While a weaker immune system is typically caused by certain diseases, malnutrition, and certain genetic disorders, it can also temporarily be caused by medications such as anticancer drugs and radiation therapy.
Your immune system can also be temporarily weakened by a stem cell or organ transplant.
How a weak immune system can cause nail problems

Lupus SLE
Some individuals may experience changes in their fingernails and toenails, including discoloration, infections, and changes to the nail shape.
Scleroderma (Systemic Sclerosis)
Nail and periungual changes are prominent in scleroderma.
May experience breaking of the nails, which refers to increased longitudinal over-curvature of the nail plate.
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
Changes to the nails can be signs of RA or other systemic conditions and should be diagnosed by a doctor.
Nail changes can include longitudinal ridges, splinter hemorrhages, and pitting.
Alopecia Areata
Nail pitting may be related to alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss.
Thyroid Disease
Thyroid disease and psoriasis can lead to nail separation.
Primary Immunodeficiency
These are conditions you’re born with that weaken your immune system, or when your immune system naturally weakens later in life.
Cancer: Certain cancers, particularly leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, can directly affect the immune system, but other cancers can also weaken it.
Diabetes: Diabetes can impair the immune system’s ability to fight off infections.
Autoimmune Diseases: These diseases cause the body’s immune system to attack its own tissues,
which can weaken the overall immune response.
Sickle Cell Disease: This genetic disorder can lead to chronic infections and weakened immunity.
Liver Cirrhosis: Severe liver damage can impair the immune system’s function.
Viral Hepatitis: Chronic viral hepatitis can lead to liver damage and weakened immunity.
Other Conditions: Congenital heart disease, obesity, asthma, chronic lung disease, and sickle cell disease can also increase the risk of complications in immunocompromised individuals.
